Crystal Saffron is a deep and sensual unisex fragrance with an eastern-spicy aroma, released in the fall of 2022 by the French niche perfume brand Matiere Premiere. Created by perfumer Aurelien Guichard, the aromatic composition is based on one of the highest quality saffron oils. The concept of the Matière Première brand is to select a specific key ingredient for each fragrance and play with its facets in an interesting way. In the case of Crystal Saffron, Aurelien Guichard wanted to move away from the image of "eastern saffron" and give it "lightness and transparency." Leathery, smoky, and slightly honeyed accents of saffron are often paired with dark woody notes, such as oud. However, Crystal Saffron was meant to be a modern interpretation of saffron, making it pure and almost crystalline, as the name suggests. As we observed at the exhibition in Cannes, this striving for purity and transparency has become a new trend. The saffron oil used for the fragrance comes from the region of Kozani in Greece and is said to be an exhaustive embodiment of this precious spice. Smoky-aromatic Somali frankincense gives the perfume a smoky-woody resinousness, and ambroxan gives the composition of Crystal Saffron a spicy, peppery aura reminiscent of leather or wood. The perfume dispenses with the "traditional" trio of rose, saffron, and oud in favor of a more western style. Here we see a new, very modern trend: a mix of cultures, a blend of rich woody-animalic notes and a "western" floral-fruit bouquet with added sunny nuances. Saffron becomes airy and has a hot-cold, terpene effect due to the addition of Somali frankincense. Crystal Saffron makes the saffron note clean and clear, giving the fragrance a completely different style - concise, elegant, and almost with a jewel-like cut.
